Awake at night with no one to talk to

By the Murlune team · Updated October 30, 2026

It is late, the house is quiet, and your mind will not settle. Everyone you might message is asleep, or you don't want to be the person who texts at 3am. Many people know this feeling, and it is a lonely one.

Here are a few gentle things to try, some ways to reach a real person tonight, and how to tell when sleepless nights need more than a guide.

First, take some pressure off

Instead of fighting to fall asleep, give yourself permission to simply rest with your eyes closed, or to get up for a little while and come back when you feel drowsy.

Turn the brightest lights down, put your phone face down if it keeps pulling you into scrolling, and have a glass of water.

Put the loop on paper

When the same thoughts keep circling, writing them down gives them somewhere to land. It doesn't have to be neat. A list of what's on your mind, a letter to someone, or one sentence about how you feel right now is enough.

If you'd like those words gone afterwards, you can write them on Murlune and burn them on screen. They never leave your device.

Reach a person, not a feed

Scrolling can feel like company, but it never answers back. A short exchange with one real person may help more than another hour of the feed:

  • Message a friend you know is awake, or one in another time zone
  • Leave a voice note for someone to hear in the morning, so the thought has somewhere to go
  • Talk to a stranger who is awake too: on Murlune you can turn on a lit window with one line about why you are up, and someone awake may knock
  • Write a message in a bottle, which waits for a reader however late it is

What to expect from a stranger at night

A stranger can't fix what is keeping you awake, but they can keep you company for a while. On Murlune nobody is matched with you at random: a knock only comes from someone who read your line and chose you, and you decide whether to open the door. Either of you can leave, block or report at any moment.

Some hours the night city is quiet. If no window is lit, turn yours on anyway, or write a bottle instead.

When it's more than a sleepless night

If you have been lying awake most nights for weeks, or sleeplessness is wearing down your days, it is worth talking to a doctor.

If you are awake because you might hurt yourself, please contact a free helpline near you now, at any hour. A guide or a stranger’s window is not enough for that.
