Burn a letter

Write a letter online, then let it burn.

Some words don't need an answer. They only need to leave you. Write to anyone, or to no one, watch the page turn to ash, and breathe out.

How it works

  1. Write it down

Start with “Dear…”, or with nothing at all. Write the thing you can't say out loud, as messy as it needs to be.

  2. Let it burn

When you're ready, set it alight. The page curls, glows and turns to ash in front of you.

  3. Breathe out

Afterwards you see how many other letters burned in the last day, so you know you weren't the only one awake.

Nobody reads it, not even us

Your letter never leaves your device. It is not sent to Murlune, not stored, and not checked by anyone. The only thing we count is that a letter burned, so we can show you how many others did too.

Why burn a letter you'll never send

Some feelings have nowhere to go. Writing them down puts them outside you, where they are easier to look at. Burning the page marks an ending: you said it, and you let it go.

There is no reply to wait for and nobody to perform for. It is a few quiet minutes that belong only to you.

What to write

If you're not sure where to begin, any of these will do:

  • A letter to someone you can't talk to anymore
  • Everything you wish you had said in that argument
  • What you're carrying that nobody knows about
  • A note to yourself from tonight

When you want someone to read it

Sometimes a letter needs an answer after all. You can put the same words in a message in a bottle and let a kind stranger write back.

Other ways to begin

  • Message in a bottle · Write what you can't tell the people around you. The river carries it to someone awake, and if your words move them, they write back.
  • Lit windows · Late at night the city is full of lit windows, each one someone still awake. Turn yours on, and another night owl may knock.
